Introduction
Healthy habits learned young last a lifetime. These eight simple practices grow with your child, from babyhood through the teenage years, and protect against many common health problems.
1. Eat a balanced, varied diet
Offer a mix of grains, proteins, vegetables and fruit at regular meals. Family meals and home-cooked food beat packaged snacks. Variety in the early years shapes tastes for life.
2. Drink water, limit sugar
Make water the everyday drink. Keep sugary drinks, packaged juice and sweets occasional. This protects teeth, weight and energy levels.
3. Move and play every day
Babies need floor play and tummy time; older children need active, outdoor play. Daily movement builds strong bones, coordination and mood.
4. Sleep well, on a routine
Consistent bedtimes and enough sleep support growth, learning and behaviour. Keep screens out of the bedroom and wind down calmly.
5. Wash hands and keep clean
Handwashing with soap before food and after the toilet prevents many illnesses. Add nail care, dental brushing and clean water.
6. Balance screen time
Set clear, age-appropriate limits and keep meals and bedtimes screen-free. Choose quality content and watch together when you can.
7. Keep up checkups and vaccines
Attend routine health checks, stay on schedule with vaccines, and deworm as advised. Prevention is easier than cure.
8. Love, talk and play
Warm, responsive relationships are the foundation of health. Talk, read, praise effort and spend time together every day.
