Introduction

A good latch makes breastfeeding comfortable for you and effective for your baby. A poor latch causes sore nipples, frustration and slow weight gain. The good news: small adjustments usually make a big difference.

Signs of a good latch

Your baby's mouth is wide open and covers much more of the areola than just the nipple. The lips are flared outward like a fish. The chin touches the breast and the nose is clear. You hear rhythmic sucking and swallowing, and feeding does not hurt beyond the first few seconds.

Signs of a poor latch

Only the nipple is in the mouth, or the lips are tucked in. Clicking or smacking sounds. Sharp, ongoing nipple pain, or cracked and flattened nipples after feeds. Your baby seems hungry soon after, or feeds take a very long time.

Helpful positions

Cradle hold is comfortable once your baby latches well. Cross-cradle gives more head control and helps newborns latch. The football (underarm) hold suits small babies, twins, or after a caesarean. Side-lying is restful for night feeds. Whatever the position, bring baby to the breast — not the breast to baby.

Fixing a painful latch

Break the suction gently with a clean finger and try again — aim the nipple toward the roof of the mouth and wait for a wide gape. Keep baby's ear, shoulder and hip in a line. If pain continues or nipples are damaged, ask a health worker or lactation supporter to watch a feed.

When to seek help

Get support if feeding stays painful, your baby is not gaining weight, has very few wet nappies, or you are worried about your milk supply. Early help often saves the breastfeeding journey.

This article is general information, not medical advice. A health worker or lactation supporter can assess your baby in person.
