Introduction
Sleep is when children grow, recharge and consolidate learning. Needs change a lot with age, and counting daytime naps as well as night sleep matters. Use the BabyCo Sleep Needs tool for your child's age.
Recommended total sleep by age
Newborns (0 to 3 months) need about 14 to 17 hours across the day and night. Infants (4 to 11 months) about 12 to 16 hours including naps. Toddlers (1 to 2 years) about 11 to 14 hours. Pre-schoolers (3 to 5 years) about 10 to 13 hours. School age (6 to 12 years) about 9 to 12 hours. Teenagers (13 to 18 years) about 8 to 10 hours.
Naps are normal
Younger children meet their needs partly through naps — several for infants, settling to one and then none through the pre-school years. Total sleep across 24 hours is what counts.
Signs of not enough sleep
Hard to wake, irritability, poor concentration, hyperactivity, frequent meltdowns, or falling asleep on short journeys. Over time, short sleep affects mood, learning and health.
Habits for better sleep
Keep consistent bed and wake times. Wind down with a calm routine — bath, story, dim lights. Avoid screens for at least an hour before bed. Keep the room dark, quiet and not too warm. Daytime activity and daylight help night sleep.
