Why does my child need vaccines
Immunization protects against diseases like tuberculosis, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, measles, rubella, hepatitis B, Hib, pneumococcal disease, Japanese encephalitis and rotavirus. Vaccinating also protects babies too young to be vaccinated and the wider community.
Are reactions normal
Mild reactions are common and expected — a little fever, or redness, swelling and tenderness at the injection site for a day or two. The BCG injection forms a small sore that slowly heals into a scar over a few weeks; keep it clean and dry. Contact your doctor for a high fever, persistent inconsolable crying for more than three hours, or a convulsion.
Can my child be vaccinated if unwell
A mild cold is usually fine. Tell the health worker if your child is significantly unwell, has a condition or treatment that lowers immunity, or recently had certain live vaccines or a blood/immunoglobulin transfusion — they will advise on timing.
What if we miss a dose
Catch-up is almost always possible — you usually do not need to start over. Go as soon as you can and bring the vaccination record so the health worker can continue from where you left off.
Where do we get vaccines
Routine vaccines are available through government health facilities and immunization clinics. Some optional vaccines (such as influenza, chicken pox, hepatitis A and HPV) may be offered privately — ask your provider.
