Introduction
Soon after birth, and again in the first weeks, your baby has a top-to-toe examination. It is quick and painless, and it reassures everyone that your baby is healthy. Knowing what is checked helps you follow along.
Head and face
The doctor feels the soft spots (fontanelles) and the head shape, and checks the mouth and palate for a complete roof. The eyes are checked for a healthy "red reflex" and for how your baby responds to light.
Heart, lungs and tummy
Listening to the heart and breathing helps pick up murmurs or breathing problems early. The abdomen and umbilicus are felt to check the organs and the cord area. Femoral pulses in the groin are checked too.
Hips, spine and skin
The hips are gently moved to rule out developmental hip problems. The spine and skin are examined, and any birthmarks noted.
Reflexes
Newborns are born with reflexes that show the nervous system is working — rooting and sucking for feeding, the grasp reflex, the startle (Moro) reflex, and the stepping reflex. Your doctor checks these as part of the exam.
Newborn screening
Depending on where you deliver, your baby may have screening for hearing and certain conditions. Ask your provider what is offered and keep the results in your child's health record.
