Introduction
Screens are part of modern family life. The goal is not zero screens but healthy balance — protecting sleep, play, learning and connection. Here is a sensible age-by-age approach.
Under 18 months
Avoid screens other than video calls with family. Babies learn from faces, voices and play, not screens. Video chatting with a grandparent is a lovely exception.
18 to 24 months
If you introduce screens, choose high-quality content and watch together, talking about what you see. Avoid solo screen use and keep it brief.
2 to 5 years
Aim for about one hour a day of quality programming, watched together when possible. Protect time for active play, reading and sleep, which matter far more for this age.
6 years and older
Set consistent limits that fit your family, and make sure screens do not crowd out sleep, physical activity, meals and homework. Agree the rules together as children grow.
Habits that help every age
Keep meals and the hour before bed screen-free. Keep screens out of bedrooms. Be a model — children copy adult screen habits. Choose content actively rather than endless scrolling.
