Introduction
Healthy teeth matter for eating, speech and confidence — and most dental problems are preventable. Good habits from the first tooth set your child up for a healthy smile.
When teeth come in
The first tooth usually appears between about six and twelve months, though timing varies widely. Most children have their full set of baby teeth by around two and a half to three years. Late or early teething alone is rarely a worry.
Easing teething
If your baby is uncomfortable, offer a clean teething ring or a cold, clean washcloth to chew. Gentle gum rubbing can help. Drooling and wanting to chew are normal. See a doctor if there are other symptoms like high fever or diarrhoea — these are not caused by teething itself.
Caring for teeth
Start cleaning as soon as the first tooth appears. Brush twice a day — after breakfast and before bed — with a small soft brush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste for under-threes, increasing to a pea-sized amount later. Brush for your child until they can do a thorough job themselves.
Protecting against decay
Avoid sugary drinks and frequent snacking on sweet foods. Never put a baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. Offer water between meals. From around six months, offer healthy foods for meals and snacks.
First dental visit
Take your child for a dental check early — around the first birthday or when teeth appear — and mention any family history of dental problems. Early visits build comfort and catch issues sooner.
