Introduction
Most childhood illnesses are mild and pass on their own. But babies can get unwell quickly, and knowing which signs need a doctor — and which need urgent care — gives you confidence instead of panic. Keep this list somewhere handy and trust your instinct: you know your child best.
Call your doctor if you notice
Repeated vomiting, especially if it distresses your child. Frequent loose or unusual stools. Persistent crying that suggests pain. Sudden shrieks of pain. Refusing feeds or far fewer wet nappies than usual. A fever that will not settle, or a very low temperature. A rash that is spreading. Unusual drowsiness or floppiness, or being very hard to wake.
Seek urgent care immediately for
Difficulty breathing, fast breathing, or the skin pulling in around the ribs. Blue or very pale lips or tongue. A fit or convulsion. A stiff neck with fever and dislike of light. A rash that does not fade when pressed. Unresponsiveness. Signs of dehydration — sunken eyes, no tears, very few wet nappies, a sunken soft spot.
Fever — what is normal
A fever is a sign the body is fighting infection, not a disease itself. Watch how your child behaves more than the number on the thermometer. Contact your doctor if a baby under three months has any fever, if the fever is very high, lasts more than two to three days, or your child seems very unwell.
Everyday safety at home
Many trips to the doctor are preventable. For infants, guard against falls from beds and changing tables, and keep small objects out of reach. For toddlers, watch for choking, hot drinks and scalds, and access to medicines or cleaning products. For 3 to 5 year olds, focus on road safety, water safety and safe play.
Keep your child's record handy
Bring your child's health record and any medicines when you visit. Note when symptoms started and how they changed — it helps your doctor a great deal.
